The Detroit News is reporting that Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse has said no to the idiotic complaint filed by a zealot group in Michigan. The "family values" group has asked that teachers be brought up on charges of distribution of pornographic materials to minors for having their students read such books as a Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Richard Wright's Black Boy, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five and Augusten Burroughs' Running with Scissors. While the case is still pending with the both the Michigan and U.S. Attorneys General, it's somewhat comforting to see that the person who may have the most to lose, given that he is local and might face direct repercussions as opposed to the state and federal folks, has stood up to these nutjobs. Sayeth Morse: "Even if teachers were not lawfully exempt from prosecution under the statute, I do not find the books in question in violation of the criminal law."
You can read more about this over at Maud Newton's blog.
My question is... What high school do they read "The Bluest Eye" in? Because that's pretty advanced and real and I wish I'd been able to study Toni Morrison in high school.
