Apologies in advance for what will be a week of links with little added commentary from yours truly.
Jim Shepard, whose short story collection Love and Hydrogen should be on your reading list, has a new story, "Trample the Dead, Hurdle the Weak," in the September issue of Harper's. It's all about Texas high school football, which if you haven't heard is the true religion of the state of Texas.
For what it's worth, California has a new poet laureate.
"Cut the bindings off of books found at a used book store. Find poems in the pages by the process of obliteration. Put pages in the mail and send them all around the world. Lather, rinse, repeat." {via}
The American Family Association warns parents of the dangers of "tawdry teen-targeted fiction."
The Decemberists' Colin Meloy wrote a song about her, now Myla Goldberg is profiled by the Village Voice.
MSNBC.com takes a look at Canada's Wolf Parade. Be sure to check out some of the other bands they've featured, including Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Okkervil River.
No link available so take my word for it. He's 6'5", 226 pounds, and wears a size 18 shoe. His name is Aaron Durley and he plays for Saudi Arabia's Little League Baseball team. Yep, he just turned 12.
If you're a fan of the Braves, baseball, or good writing, check out one of my favorite new blogs, Rowland's Office. Best name for a blog ever.

Yeah, its true about Aaron....the kid is HUGE! I met him last year when my nephew played for the Columbia Mo team. I'm 26 yrs old, and 5ft tall, and didn't believe it myself til I met him. I felt like I was looking up at a tree! The top of my head was just inches above his elbow. I see now at 14 he is 6'10"! His hands and feet were so freaking huge. Kinda made me nervous, but he was a very nice kid.
