From the trailer to the movie adaptation of JT LeRoy's The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things:
In 1996, at age 16, JT Leroy burst onto the literary scene with his stories based on his troubled childhood.
Critics called the work "Beautiful," "Mesmerizing," "A startling achievement." And JT Leroy became a national celebrity.
Ten years later, on January 9th, 2006, an article appeared in The New York Times. It revealed that JT Leroy never existed.
Based on the book by JT Leroy...
And of course, Marilyn Manson has a role. You can see the trailer here, and another version here.

I traded e-mails with LeRoy over the past couple of years, and always raed them with a sense of disbelief. Now I know why.

Wow. That's pretty funny. You don't suppose the hoax is itself a hoax created by the publicity department of whatever distributor was unlucky enough to pick up this movie? Like, J.T. Leroy is real, but the movie sucked, so...
I think my head just asploded.
